Back to School Safety Tips

There's no better time than now to talk to the kids about road safety rules



Are you looking for back to school safety tips? Then the new school year must be about to begin.

With the return to school kids are exposed to various dangers. Awareness of safety rules and abiding by them will avoid unnecessary accidents.

The following back to school safety tips will assist you in sending your child to school safely.


The journey to school and back

Even before school begins, take your child to school and back a number of times (by foot or by car), in order to get him/her acquainted with the route.


Safety on the way

Will your child be walking to school? Show him/her the safest route to get there and back. Try to avoid routes that will entail crossing roads but if that is not possible; teach him/her to cross the road safely.
Before crossing the road remember:
  • Always cross the road at a zebra crossing.
  • Stand on the sidewalk one step back from the curb. If there isn't a curb, stand a few steps back from the road.
  • Listen to the sounds of the traffic - even before a car comes into view it can be heard.
  • Look left, right and left again properly (if it is a main junction look in all four directions).
  • If the road is clear, cross quickly but do not run across the road!
Try and make sure that your child goes to school with friends.
Explain to your child how to behave with strangers.
Equip your child with emergency phone numbers. It is essential that he/she is able to reach you if needed, but he/she should also have additional emergency phone numbers.


Safe bicycle riding

If your child rides a bicycle to school, ensure that he/she always wears a safety helmet when riding a bike. Studies prove that wearing a safety helmet reduces head injuries by 85%.
Never cross the road between parked cars while riding a bike.
Crossing the road will only take place on a zebra crossing. The child will walk next to the bike and guide it across the road.


Safety in a car

While riding in a car, ensure that all of the passengers wear their seat belts.
When you arrive at school, ensure that the children exit the vehicle onto the sidewalk and not onto the road side.
Before you drive away, ensure that your kids have entered the school grounds safely.


Safety on a bus

Ensure that your child waits for the bus at the bus stop on the sidewalk and does not go near the road.
The child must wait until the bus has stopped completely before he/she proceeds towards it.
The child must fasten his/her seatbelt on the bus if available. If a seatbelt is not available the child must sit still in his/her chair and not move around the bus.
Only when the bus has come to a complete stop, the child must get off directly onto the sidewalk.
If the child has to cross the road he/she will wait until the bus has driven away. Only when the coast is clear will he/she cross the road using the road safety rules.
Never run into the road or linger in front of a bus. The bus driver cannot see a child who is standing or bending down in front of the bus.
