Flying Kites

Fun Activity for Kids and Â…Adults

Have you ever tried to build and fly model airplanes?

Flying kites had become a popular hobby for both kids and adults. I have been trying to work out what it is about this activity that makes it so fascinating to so many people, and I have come to a conclusion; what makes it so special is its simplicity.

You have to agree that there's nothing like a simple activity to keep the kids occupied happily for hours.

So what do you actually need in order to go out for a few hours of bliss in the great outdoors?

Choosing a Kite

Learn how to make a kite

Before you set out you will need .... a kite. You can certainly purchase one if that's what you prefer, but I personally am all for making homemade kites. This choice has a number of advantages:

  • The kids will be occupied with an enjoyable arts and crafts activity.
  • The activity will arouse their excitement in preparation for setting off to into the outdoors.
  • The kids will be filled with pride when they see the kite that they made with their own hands, fly in the sky.

Choosing a Suitable Location
Choosing a suitable location for flying kites is a most important decision not only from the aspect of safety but from the aspect of getting the maximum amount of enjoyment out of the activity too. Choose an open area away from buildings. Electricity poles etc. are potentially dangerous. An open field or the beach will serve you well.

Choosing Suitable Weather
I'm no expert in flying kites, but from my experience, a nice clear day with a breeze will do the job well. In order to determine whether there is a breeze, you can observe the movement of the trees.

Flying Kites with Friends

More activities for kids with friends

Before you set out, make arrangements with friends, and go out into the great outdoors together. The kids will enjoying flying their kites much more if they do it with friends. It's just not fun to fly a kite alone!

A few years ago, I organized an activity like this for my pupils. Once we had prepared kites we set out into the outdoors to fly them. I can tell you that the kids enjoyed it no end. They ran around the terrain, competed with one another who could fly their kite the highest, and were really proud of the kites that they had made.

From this experience I can say that most of the kids' enjoyment was a result of them being together in a group of friends.
