Fun Summer Games

Fun summer games don't have to include water. There are lots of other games that can be played in the summer.

As a rule, all kinds of games are suitable for the summer season whether they are played inside or outside. That is the advantage of the summer.

Enable the kids to experience different types of games such as: box games, social games, treasure hunts, ball games, etc.

Find time to play with your kids and enjoy mutual quality time.

Four Squares

by Valerie, M.
(Marion, OH)

All you need is a cement place and draw with sidewalk chalk four big squares. (It makes a plus sign where all the squares connect)

You use any ball that bounces like a kick ball. The number one square starts by bouncing the ball and then hitting into any other square. The ball must bounce in your square before you hit it and so on.

The person who misses up first goes to the square that is number 4.

The object is to stay in the number one spot.

Back Yard Playhouse

by Kathy, M.
(South Hadley, MA)

My friend used to write plays as a kid, and would set up a backyard "playhouse" in which neighborhood kids got involved in putting on plays starring the kids. Kids could have lots of fun creating plays and acting them out for other kids.

Treasure Hunt

by Randy, S.
(Charles Town, West Virginia)

Have two teams one pirates and one ninjas, and have a map for each team, with clues that lead you to a buried treasure eventually. And even though the other team doesn't make it to the buried treasure you can have them win the same prize anyway, or you can just have the two teams meet up at the same clue right before they all find the treasure together and they'll learn about teamwork.

Trust Game

by Janni, I.
(Helsinki, Finland)

I learned this on a course directed to people who'll work with the disabled but this game is suitable for all people aged 3 or 4 years and up. As long as they can walk and follow simple directions, everything should be ok. If the person has an injury in either hand, simply use the other.

(For simplicity I'll use the term 'her' etc. instead of repeating him/her all the time, and say 'friend', even though you can do this with a child or your husband or anyone.)

Do this in the nature or, if the weather's bad, inside the house. Stand side by side and take your friends' hand in your own. Tell her to close her eyes and start leading her slowly around the surroundings.

Make sure the ground is even enough, so that she won't fall (that would ruin the whole thing completely: you'll want to make her feel safe even if she won't see) and warn her for any obstacles ('there's a tree branch in front of you, lift your leg up a little bit higher' and so on). Otherwise try to talk as little as possible, just listen, smell and touch.

When you come to something interesting (avoid sharp and poisonous objects, like sharp rocks, poison ivy etc.) guide her to touch it and when it seems like she's done with the touching, go to the next interesting thing.

Depending on the age of the participants you can go on for example for 15 minutes or as long as you want. Then you'll lead the friend back to the place where you started and let her guide you in a similar way.

If the person who is to guide you is very young, it's ok (in my opinion) to peek a bit every now and then as it can be quite difficult for a young child to remember to watch out for things on the ground. If you find it hard to keep your eyes closed, you can always tie a scarf over your eyes.
