Outdoor Water Games

Outdoor water games for the young and the young at heart!
Outdoor Water Games

Water is a synonym for summer. Summer is not really summer without outdoor water games. The choice of outdoor water games is enormous, and they can be played in the garden, at the pool or at the beach. The games can be group games or one on one, and they are always fun for the young and the young at heart as well.

Cool & Squishy Sponge Toss

by Edwina C.
(Greenwood, IN)

A couple of summers ago, we needed a way for a group of kids to keep cool and stay safe at the same time. We took an ordinary, inexpensive bag of sponges and some twine. We cut the sponges into strips and mixed them into one big pile.

We took 5 strips of various sponges in different colors, stacked them on top of one another and then tied them in the center with the twine. We then twisted the sponge strips around to make sponge stars.

The day of our event, we put out a muck bucket filled with water and the sponges and had a huge, wet sponge fight! The kids kept cool and had so much fun.....so much so, that the adults joined in too.

Musical Squirt Bottles

by Lisa, H.
(North Saint Paul, MN)

Equipment:

  • Squirt bottles filled with water
  • A radio
Have the group sit in a circle. Have the children pass the squirt bottle around the circle while you play music on the radio. Stop the music. When the music stops the children stop passing the bottles.

The child with the squirt bottle gets to squirt twice. He/she may squirt the person to his/her left twice, the person to his/her right twice, or both of them once.

Then, resume the music and keep playing. If you have a large group of children you may want to use more than one bottle.

Sand and Water

by Rosalie S.
(Portland, Oregon)

My son loves to be outside. His favorite thing to do is play in sand and get wet. We recently got him a sand and water activity center that he just loves!

If you don't have a sand center you could always just use two small wadding pools fill one with sand and the other with water.

Bubble Fun

by Molly, C.
(Citrus Heights, CA)

One of my kids' favorite sunny day activities is to play with bubbles. Learning long ago, to buy bubbles in bulk, we love experimenting with different items to make bubbles with. Some of our favorites- plastic strawberry baskets, and string tied onto straws.

Slippery Slidin'

by Emily, P.
(Thorold, Canada)

We have a big hill in our yard, and at the bottom there's a pond we like to swim in sometimes. On hot days we let the kids get out a couple old tarps, laid them down the hill, overlapping slightly, and put the sprinkler on them. Then they use it like a water slide and slide right down into the pond! It's a riot to watch!

Pool Spell

by Nancy, W.
(Pell, AL)

All summer long I have kids at my house to swim in the pool, and when you have quiet a few in there things begin to get a little troublesome. So I put them on one side of the pool and play Mother May I with a little education added to help keep there little brains going.

We pick a number between one and ten and the closest one to the number I am thinking goes first. Starting off from the closest to the number to the least closest determines the order they go in.

Each one has a word to spell, if they get it right, they move forward. If they get wrong they move back a step. Each one has a different word to spell. It keeps there spelling in check and keeps them from having spats against one another.
